The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago—almost as large as all the other islands combined—and bursting with life. Within 4,000 square miles of land, you’ll experience dense tropical rainforests, black-sand beaches, snow-capped peaks, remnants of ancient Hawaiian settlements, and the incredible Kilauea volcano.

The Maui Experience

Maui is renowned for its unimaginable beauty. Alpine-like forests cover the upcountry slopes of Mt. Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano. The famed “Road to Hana” hugs the coast, white sandy beaches line the shores, and magnificent sea cliffs hover over the blue Pacific. An aerial tour of Maui will quickly reveal why it’s continually been voted “The World’s Best Island.”

We really enjoyed our road to Hana tour last week. Our driver, Ray, was very knowledgeable and made the drive seem easy and (almost) quick. His insights as to Hawaiian culture and local information was excellent. And, he added a stop to show us some turtles, which was very cool. The helicopter flight back was equally excellent. Our pilot (Marco?) did a very good job, making every effort to ensure all the people in the helicopter got an excellent view of the waterfalls and scenery. The flight was comfortable and calm. Overall, the experience was tremendous and one we enjoyed greatly. Thanks!

Simple Version: - Don't worry about weather. Blue Hawaiian is 100% professional, and they take care of customers. They will tell you what your options are, and you can make a decision right there if weather is sketchy. - Listen to the pilots. They know about seeing, weather, and more. Make sure you listen to them if you have to decide. Sunny is NOT always better. - While the volcano is truly cool from the air, including all the flow fields etc., Kohala is THE grand finale. Spend as much time there as possible and landing is just excellent. - Front row seats are worth it, windows in back are just fine, but they don't split couples so one gets the middle which have lesser views - Karl is a GREAT pilot and guide. Longer Version: On Big Island, we booked a long 3.5 hour full tour. We arrived and at the briefing we were told the weather would not allow us to view the volcano, which was one of our goals. There were ~30 people for 5 full copter tours going out at the same time on different flights/tours. They offered everyone three choices: cancel for full refund; reschedule for another day; or go on a tour to the Kohala coast. Each flight would have to have 4 minimum to go and they would combine copters to get as many as possible to go if we wanted. Kohala is truly the grand finale of the whole island tour and this shorter tour is solely focused on that area, with a landing. It was a much less expensive and we were informed we would immediately receive a refund if we "down selected" to that tour. We spoke with the pilot Karl, who said it is actually better with some overcast, as we go in/out of canyons without sun glare in the inside windows of the copter, and it is really cool seeing the many waterfalls in full flow. So, we decided to go, and 2 others on our flight agreed. We got windows in the back row, which was a real upgrade (middle seats have a lesser view), and if available, they would have given us front row. So, off we went. FYI: of 30 people, 21 opted to reschedule or cancel for a refund. Management did not blink twice. Our tour was truly wonderful. I had done a full island tour in 2018 including the volcano, on a very sunny day and the sun glare on this inside DID make taking picture through the glass tricky and often impossible. The purchased video was a Godsend on both trips. Flying into the Kohala valleys in the misty rain with waterfalls ALL over the place in full flow was magical. Landing at the base of one was bucket list worthy. Karl was right - he promised we would be delighted WITH the weather, and it really did make it special.
