If taking a flight on the big island - BEWARE! The Discover Hilo tour does NOT go near the crater, despite what the intro picture for the tour looks like (makes it look like it does). Because the map didn’t look like it got that close, i chatted TWICE on two different days with two different representatives to confirm this flight went by the crater before dropping close to $1k for my wife and i to have front row seats. BOTH said that it did, just not directly over because of the potential danger, which i figured. Upon arriving that day (after a one day delay be side of weather - uncontrollable) the representative clarified that it indeed did NOT go near the crater, that we had to do the other tour. And this was after we had to drive the two hours from the north of Kona area to get to Hilo airport, when we could have driven five minutes to the blue Hawaiian on our side, for the proper tour. It was an extremely frustrating experience and a good six total hours of our day ruined. I won’t fly these guys again. If you do, just know the Discover Hilo tour does not go near the crater, and don’t rely on their people for correct info. The only positive was our pilot, k own as “Chewy”. He was great during the actual, limited flight.
