Typically presented to only the cream of five- and six-star hotels, cruise lines and restaurants world wide, the Five Star Diamond Award is considered to be the most prestigious recognition in the entire travel industry. Blue Hawaiian is the only activity company in all Hawaii, of any kind, to ever receive this coveted award.

The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences is the only International award program which honors establishments with its most prestigious symbol of excellence, "The International Star Diamond Award." Only those establishments of five star quality are considered. The Academy is governed by a Board of internationally renowned trustees which oversees the decision to recognize establishments and organizations worldwide for their outstanding commitment to hospitality within their category and classification. Members of the international financial institutions, industry professionals and world travelers recommend hotels, restaurants, airlines, cruise ships, chefs and wineries. Anonymously they visit establishments evaluating ambiance, gastronomy, cleanliness and most importantly hospitality to ensure that the selected establishments continuously maintain the exceptionally high standards set by the Academy. After a final selection is made, the Academy's Board of Trustees votes upon nominations to determine whether the establishments are entitled to The Academy's prestigious Star Diamond Award. The decisions of The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences are solely based on whether the establishment demonstrates a commitment to service, ambience, cleanliness, and hospitality in every aspect of its operation. This standard of dedication is what sets the American Academy's Internationally recognized Star Diamond Award apart from all others. The Academy was formed in 1989 as an offspring of a restaurant-rating bureau, founded in 1949.
